This is the third and final in the totem series as it was produced from 2020 to 2021. The sculpture depicted here takes on greater symmetry than the other two in the series, and fits more naturally in both hands because of this adjustment in form. In holding the stone, our hands mimic the position they might take with a begging bowl, encouraging a similar vulnerability and sensitivity to the material. Though it is made of the same material as the first totem in this series, a higher concentration of iron inclusions and impurities lends this soapstone a richly rusted color, akin to corten steel in appearance but polished smooth to be gentle on the hands. The top surface features large, scalloped ridges, which denote clearly that this part of the stone is not meant to connect with us, but with a world beyond our typical experience.
