A minimalist box that brings enjoyment from a glance as well as thorough use. Only six pieces of wood are involved in its construction — the absolute minimum for a rectangular box — and while the joinery itself is deceptively simple, its exposure along the edges of the box draws the eye in to linger in the space between detail and overall form. The opening appears as a moment along the trajectory of these long faces, materializing in our presence before disappearing again at the edges of the piece.
The yellow birch used in this box was one of my favorite woods to work with over the summer, and captures the simplicity of this style better than any other species, in my opinion. It may appear plain at first sight, but this birch has a beautiful, warm tone, which is complimented by consistency in relatively straight grain where the change in seasons can be read cleanly as the lines transition from light to dark. The VR/AR model is meant to convey size and general color properties, and may not precisely match the box on sale.
